BYOA: Bringing Your Own ArcGIS Keys

How BYOA works on Professional Max — direct cost control on ArcGIS services, with usage routed to your own ArcGIS billing.

Last updated May 13, 2026

BYOA — Bring Your Own ArcGIS — is the Professional Max feature that routes spatial-service costs (GeoEnrichment, Places, routing, geocoding) to your own ArcGIS billing instead of through Curated's credit pool.

Why BYOA

  • Direct cost control — your ArcGIS bill reflects exactly what your team consumed
  • Unlimited usage within ArcGIS limits — no Curated credit cap on spatial operations
  • Same governance — usage rolls up to your existing ArcGIS Online billing dashboard
  • Audit transparency — ArcGIS usage is auditable through Esri's standard reporting

What changes with BYOA

Without BYOA:

  • Every spatial-service call (geocode, enrichment, drive-time, etc.) consumes Curated credits
  • Your monthly credit allotment caps usage
  • Costs are settled through Curated billing

With BYOA:

  • Spatial-service calls hit your ArcGIS Online account directly
  • ArcGIS credits cap usage (per your AGO contract)
  • Costs settle through your existing ArcGIS billing
  • LLM inference and other Curated platform operations still consume Curated credits

LLM BYOK (bring your own LLM keys) is a separate roadmap item — see the BYOK FAQ.

Setup

1. Connect your ArcGIS Online account

If not already connected: Settings → Connections → ArcGIS Online. Authenticate.

2. Enable BYOA

Settings → Connections → ArcGIS Online → Enable BYOA

You'll be asked to confirm — once enabled, spatial-service calls route to your AGO account. There's no immediate user-facing change; the next query uses your credentials.

3. (Optional) Set per-user caps

Settings → Users → click user → ArcGIS service cap

You can cap individual users' ArcGIS consumption to prevent any one user from burning your AGO credit pool. Caps reset on your AGO cycle, not your Curated cycle.

4. Verify in your AGO billing dashboard

Within 24 hours, you should see Curated-driven usage appearing in your AGO billing dashboard. It will be tagged with the Curated application identifier so it's distinguishable from direct AGO usage.

Key rotation and rollback

  • Key rotation — Curated supports key rotation with two slot fields (active + standby). Update the standby, switch, then retire the old.
  • Disabling BYOA — Toggle off at Settings → Connections. Spatial calls revert to Curated-pooled credits on next query.

What still uses Curated credits with BYOA

  • LLM inference — model calls for the conversational reasoning agents
  • Synthesis and orchestration — agent-to-agent communication
  • Partner data — Dwellsy IQ, Hubexo, and other contracted data partners are not on the ArcGIS bill
  • PlaceStory and artifact generation — rendering and storage are on Curated

For most organizations, ArcGIS consumption is the largest single cost driver; BYOA shifts that to direct billing while keeping the rest on Curated.
